The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words – Rei and Ki, and is pronounced, “ray-kee”. The word “Rei” means universal (Universal Energy Field) and this is the definition most have accepted. However, this interpretation is a very general one. Japanese ideograms have many levels of meaning. They vary from the mundane to the highly esoteric. So, while it is true the Rei can be interpreted as universal, meaning that it is present everywhere, it also is more accurately interpreted to mean higher knowledge. This is the wisdom that comes from God or Great Spirit and is the God-Consciousness which is all-knowing. It understands each person completely. It knows the cause of all problems and difficulties and knows how to heal them.
The word “Ki” means the same as Chi in Chinese, and has the same meaning as the “Human Energy Field” in the work of Barbara Ann Brennan. When the Human Energy Field is unobstructed the body feels at ease, balanced and in harmony with nature. Where the energy is blocked or obstructed the body feels dis-ease. It is the purpose of Reiki Practitioners to channel through their hands, the Universal Energy, amplified by their intention and attention to assist others in recovering their natural state of health and balance. Reiki guides itself with its own wisdom, rather than requiring the direction of the practitioner. It is easily transmitted across great distances by a well practiced Reiki Master.
In the Christian tradition Reiki is called “laying on of hands” and is believed to be associated with receiving the Holy Spirit, a blessing or healing. It is sometimes called The Divine Touch. Laying on of hands has a long tradition in shamanistic traditions as well and practiced by many groups around the world.
I have 30 years of experience in “Laying on of hands.” My Reiki training and attunements have amplified my abilities to relieve my clients of pain and suffering. Whether the pain is physical or emotional it matters not to Spirit. Whether the client is in my office or 5 thousand miles away, the energy knows no restrictions. Universal healing energy permeates all things.
